A letter from Albert Einstein to Mileva Marić, March 1901

Before he became a global symbol of intellect, Albert Einstein was a young physicist struggling to find his place in the world. During his student years in Zurich, he fell in love with Mileva Marić, the only woman in his physics class. Their early letters reveal a tender, idealistic love shaped by mutual ambition, playful humour, and a deep desire for connection.
This letter was written in March 1901, while Einstein was away in Milan and Mileva remained in Zurich. At just 22 years old, he poured his hopes into a letter that tried to offer comfort, support, and reassurance. His words reflect the dreams of a young man not yet famous - just in love, uncertain of the future, but willing to build a life together.
Their relationship would later fracture under the pressures of family, illness, and Einstein’s growing fame. But in this moment, there is only affection, shared ideals, and a promise to give what he can.

Milan, March 27, 1901

My beloved little sweetheart

You must not be sad anymore, darling. I am not worthy of your sadness.
If only I could come into your room sometime, take you in my arms and kiss you until you were cheerful again. If only I could be with you.

I will work and work. I will think of you in every step I take.

What I can give you is not so very much, and yet, I have the feeling that it could make you happy.

Yours, Albert

At 76cm wide by 102cm tall, What I Can Give You works well as a feature piece on a mid-sized wall, ideally one at least 1.2 metres across to give the composition room to breathe. Its format suits placement above a sofa, console or bed, where its warm neutral, soft stone and parchment tones can anchor the space. Warm ambient lighting brings out the depth within the surface. What I Can Give You suits contemporary, transitional or Japandi interiors with a considered colour scheme.

What I Can Give You's warm neutral, soft stone and parchment tones sit well with warm timbers such as walnut or American oak, paired with brushed brass or aged bronze hardware for a considered lift. A boucle cushion in a complementary tone echoes the palette, while a warm limestone or terracotta floor keeps the space feeling grounded. Linen curtains in a soft neutral shade allow the tones to read clearly in natural light. What I Can Give You also pairs well with blackbutt furniture or a timber side table.
